Description

Overview of T3 DP in Pharmaceutical Use and Its Benefits

A compound called Liothyronine sodium or otherwise known as T3 DP, a synthetic version of the naturally produced thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3). It is the primary regulator of metabolism in the body, controlling many processes that make up daily living (heart rate, temperature and energy expenditure for example. T3 also binds to receptors in order to increase transcriptional activation regarding an individual’s metabolic pathways. Most often, T3 DP is used for the treatment of hypothyroidism, which occurs as a result of an underactive thyroid resulting in symptoms like fatigue, weight gain and depression.

Medicinal uses and benefits

T3 DP acts as a substitute, replacing or providing the absence of thyroid hormone in hypothyroid patients. This drives up metabolism, which results in increased energy levels as well as mood and sharpness of thought. Furthermore, at times T3 DP is used in treatment of goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland or for treating certain forms and stages of thyroid cancer during preparation to therapy.

Dosage and Administration

T3 DP is always dosed orally after starting again with lower doses titrating up slowly, which are usually individually determined by patient requirements and response to treatment. This drug generally is taken once a day, though in some cases divided doses are used to keep levels of the hormone steady throughout the day. Thyroid hormone levels must be monitored in the long term to prevent side effects, particularly hyperthyroidism if doses are too high.

Side Effects and Precautions

Although T3 DP is generally well-tolerated, it may lead to adverse effects if the dosage is not adjusted properly. Included, is too much thyroid replacement or excessive levels of thyroid hormone in the body which may not only lead to the three common symptoms already mentioned above. High doses may also cause bone loss or osteoporosis over time, especially in postmenopausal women.

T3 DP may be used with caution in those suffering from cardiovascular disease as it can increase the heart rate and realistically this use might make things worse. Patients should also tell their health-care provider about any other medication they are taking, as some drugs can interact with T3 DP and affect its efficacy.
