T4 DP: All About Thyroid Medication

Mechanism of Action

T4 DP is mainly used to either substitute or enhance the inadequate hormone of thyroid in a body. Once ingested, T4 DP is absorbed into the circulation and converted to its active form, triiodothyronine in peripheral tissues. The T3 binds to intracellular thyroid hormone receptors leading direct and indirect effects on gene expression and impacting the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, proteins etc. This helps reset the normal metabolic rate, keep your energy levels up and regulate temperature.

Indications for Use

T4 DP find its greatest use and most compelling sig­naling in the treatment of hypothyroidism, regardless of whether it is a primary or secondary disorder. It is also used to treat goiter (an enlarged thyroid gland) and for people who have had their thyroids removed or treated with radioactive iodine.

Side Effects and Precautions

We all have our own experience with T4 DP and the consensus seems to be that although it is generally well tolerated, if dosaging isn’t optimised some people feel quite unwell on this drug. Palpitations, nervousness and insomnia are common. Angina, heart failure or an allergic reaction to the inactive ingredients in their medication- these reactions are unlikely but they can be very serious.

Among patients with cardiovascular comorbidity, a lower dose should be considered; anti-inflammatory therapy may exacerbate concomitant heart conditions. Abrupt withdrawal of T4 DP should also be avoided as this may result in sudden re-emergence of hypothyroid symptoms.

T4 DP is a key to help resolve problems with hypothyroidism and elevate the standard of care. If correctly dosed and monitored, the disease can be managed so that patients lead normal healthy lives outside of a hospital.
